Editor’s Note

The way we purchase and consume books has become diverse, spanning both traditional stores and the increasingly central role of smartphones. Data shows that two-thirds of smartphone owners worldwide now use their devices for entertainment, including reading books. Africa is not immune to this growth, driven by a young demographic attracted to the convenience of digital media. These young innovators and consumers are propelling digital publishing forward.

Statista projects the e-publishing market in Africa to reach US$1.25 million with a user volume of 224.4 million in 2024 alone. This presents a substantial market opportunity. The pressing question is: can we tap into it? Is there a synergy between traditional brick-and-mortar bookstores and digital platforms in Africa? What does this mean for bookselling and distribution on the continent?

In this issue, we address these questions with insights from successful leaders in bookselling and innovators in digital publishing. They share what’s changing, what’s working, and how to get more books to more readers across the continent, whether digitally or through improved physical distribution.

I hope you enjoy this issue.
